How to photograph the night sky complete with stars?

I'm wanting to capture the night sky full of stars on camera. I have a �300 digitial canon camera but it will not capture them. At best, it will capture the very brightest star but it will only be a very small dot of light and the rest of the picture will be completely black, even if there were thousands of stars in the actual sky. How can I do this?
